Papier x Rachael Cocker

Nestled away in the attic of a warren-like 17th century building on the Norfolk coast, Rachael Cocker has the freedom to let the seeds of creative ideas bloom naturally. In her Great Yarmouth studio, the designer and potter makes ceramics painted with folksy flowers in joyous arrangements.

Now Rachael’s endlessly playful designs have been planted across a collection of Papier stationery – a delight for anyone with a tendency for inky fingers.

“There's a real magic to the ceramic process. You never know exactly how your work will look until it’s fired—so it keeps you wanting more. I now have my own studio and kiln which has given me even more freedom to experiment!”

“Flowers, by their nature, are celebratory and luxurious: a fleeting burst of color which only lasts a few days. I am interested in our desire to bring flowers inside; whether in a vase on a window sill, a textile print or wallpaper; having flowers in our homes brings us happiness!”

“I have a kitchen area with a kettle and toaster and a comfy easy chair so it is a very homely, cosy place to be!” “It is sometimes easier to focus and be productive when I’m on my own. But to be honest I miss the social side of my shared studio. I think I need a little studio dog to keep me company!”

“The process was really exciting. I painted all my designs on paper and sent them in the post, the good old-fashioned way! Working straight onto paper is my favorite method of designing. The team at Papier then digitally transformed them into the final designs. It was magical to see them come together.” “I have always loved stationery from a very small age and still do! The creative potential that is held in a new notebook is totally thrilling. I always feel inspired to plan and make when I have beautiful stationery.”

Being handsy (with crafts)

“I have always loved making things and keeping my hands occupied: it is how I relax, as well as work. When I’m not making ceramics, drawing or painting in the studio I am usually knitting, sewing or cooking. My partner says I am a ‘relentless crafter’! I am from a creative family so perhaps it has been bred into me! I love learning and experimenting with materials and processes and seeing how they turn out. I find it compulsive.”
